Melchior WATHELET, born in 1949 in Petit-Rechain (Belgium) where he is still living, is “licencié en droit” (1972), “licencié en Science économique” (1974) (Liège University) and Master of Laws (1976 (Harvard University).
After three years as research Fellow at the Liège University (European law and Economics), he is elected Member of the Belgian House of Representatives (1977), is appointed Member of the Belgian Government (1980-1981 and 1988 – 1995), Member or President of the Walloon Government (1981-1988), being namely Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice, Minister of Defense.
His career of University Professor begins in 1985 at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve.
In 1995, he leaves the political life to become Judge at the European Court of Justice until 2003. From 2003 to 2012, he is member of the French Bar (in a tax law firm, for the European law aspects) and comes back to the European Court as Advocate General (2012) and First Advocate General (2014-2018).
He has been Professor of European Law at Liège and Louvain-la-Neuve Universities until last September and is a has been visiting or invited Professor in different other Universities (Paris-Dauphine, Dijon, Paris II, Lyon III, Bâton Rouge (USA), Hamburg (Germany), Szeged (Hungary), Luxemburg and now Leuven.
