The Flame of the Winter Olympic Games “Sochi 2014” started its journey to Russia

Afterwards, the High Priestess Ino Menegaki gave the sacred light of Olympism to the HOC President Spyros Capralos, who handed it over to the Sochi Delegation, while thousands spectators who were watching the ceremony were clapping.

The Flame of the Winter Olympic Games “Sochi 2014” started its journey to Russia, following the completion of the Greek part of the relay and the handover ceremony that took place today in Panathenaic Stadium. The President of the Greek Republic, Mr Karolos Papoulias, attended the ceremony. Mr. Spyros Capralos, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, handed over the Olympic Flame to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mr. Dmitry Kozak, who was leading the Russian delegation.

The last torchbearer who lit the Torch Cauldron inside the stadium was Panagiotis Markouizos, seven times Greek champion in figure-skating.  Following, the priestesses performed a dance inspired by Choreographer Artemis Ignatiou, accompanied by the music of composer Giannis Psimadas.

The Handover Ceremony of the Olympic Flame attended the Undersecretary of State for Sport Ioannis Andrianos, the International Olympic Academy President Isidoros Kouvelos, the IOC Member Lambis Nikolaou and many other VIPs.

Before the ceremony, the orchestra, the choir and the children’s choir of the Greek National Opera, performed the musical composition “Five Greek Dances for large orchestra” by Nikos Skalkotas and “Polovtsian Dances” by Alexander Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” under the direction of Ilias Voudouris, with the baritone soloist Dimitris Voudouris and the soprano Elena Kelesidi. The baritone Dimitris Platanias sang the National Hymn of Greece.
