This year, by adopting the message of the IOC President Dr Thomas Bach, “Olympism and Corona” a new approach was promoted for the celebration of the Olympic Day 2020 which had a great impact and success. An online marathon was held to send a message in favor of sports with a video or a photo of sports activities and more than 60,000 posts on facebook, instagram and twitter.In addition, an online relay race was organized for Greek Olympic athletes, who sent a video message about the Olympic Day and the values of sports, each of them passing to the next one a letter from the phrase "Olympic Day 2020".
The Olympians who participated were Lefteris Petrounias, Vasiliki Millousi, Christos Volikakis, Emmanouil Karalis, Sofia Bekatorou, Tassoula Kelesidou, Nery Niangkouara, George Tzelilis, Pavlos Kayalis, George Chatziefstathiou, Eleni Chatziliadou, Panayiotis Gionis, Viktoras Mitrou and Spyros Gianniotis.Young artists from all over Greece, created works dedicated to the Olympic Day, which were presented in an online painting exhibition which was presented in a video in collaboration with the Children’s Αrt Gallery of Greece. The views of the two videos created reached 12,000.Also, for the first time this year, due to the fact that all the primary schools of the country remained open until the end of June, it was proposed to the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs that the Physical Education classes should be dedicated to the Olympic Day with a total of 4,500 students participating in those.
Sports activities and acquaintance with the Olympic sports were also organized for the celebration of the Olympic Day in sports centers such as the Youth Sports Centre of Agios Kosmas, the YMCA of Thessaloniki, in sports clubs in Ancient Olympia, in Ios and in Porto Rafti, with the presence and participation of Greek Olympians, following the instructions for Covid 19 and the sports hygiene protocols.The Hellenic Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Academy organised once again since October 2019 the innovative training programme "I love sports - Kids’ Athletics" in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense, which has been attended by a total of 210,000 children from 2,473 primary schools across the country.
Furthermore, the National Olympic Academy of Greece, in cooperation with Deutsche Sportjugend, continued their excellent cooperation for the Youth Exchange programmes in sports. The first exchanges were successfully carried out and the second round of exchanges has already started with great interest in participation in the Programme by new clubs.In addition, the National Olympic Academy of Greece, in cooperation with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the French Embassy and the French Institute, continued launching the programme "Generation 2004 in Greece on the Road to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024".A programme aiming at the propagation of the Olympic spirit, the Olympic education and the French culture and, through the organization of annual Olympic conferences, in the presence of French and Greek athletes who participated in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, at creating an active network of approximately 1,800 young people, a bilingual "generation 2004" capable of spreading the values of Olympism.
